The cartoon and the beginning of the 21th century - El humor gráfico en los inicios del siglo XXI

THE CARTOON AND THE BEGINNING OF THE 21st CENTURY

INTRODUCTION

Por: Osvaldo Macedo de Sousa

The poet wrote: Times change so as wishes. Time is composed of changes. Sometimes they happen slowly but some other times they happen so quickly they overtake us. The global warning is as undeniable reality. The ?cold wars? melted and hurricanes and tropical storms are all over the planet. Society is getting more instable and susceptibilities are on the surface of our skin.
The media are a reflex of the culture of each society and therefore they change simultaneously with it, doing everything to be its modeller. When society charges so do the media and as a consequence journalism is not the same now as it was at the time of the great press revolution during the liberalism period. Today we talk about neo-liberalism which is something very different, even opposite from the previous.
Concerning the structure of the press satirical drawing from the 18th and 19th centuries is not the same of those from contemporary society, because we have now different ways of living the politics, of living in society. Of course it is legitimate to say that artifices of the satirical, ironic or humoristic creation are always the same, changing only its way of tackling.
One of the cartoon pioneers, Charles Philipon said: ?I?m not accused for my drawings but for what is inside your conscience?. The way society deals with conscience has been changing from decade to decade, from year to year in a spiral which sometimes turn back to the past and others goes forward to an hypothetical future.
Cartoon is an Art with graphical aesthetic, with journalism communication and socio-political philosophy. As an ally, or as a weapon of dialogue, it uses satiric irony, humor and/or comicality. Therefore we can find some periods dominated by realism or pamphleteerism, by philosophy, morality and absurd? in a game of mirrors showing the soul of our society. Being a steady art, the aesthetic cannot overcome the message, neither the comicality smoother the philosophical. As someone said:?more comicality makes the critic-philosophical thought become thinner?. But also this needs a bit of humour in order to be active and efficient. In a cartoon, the message is the most important, and then the humor, but both should get the reader at the same time.
The problem is to separate the theory from the practice. If, on one hand we talk about a serious, tragic, and absurd nowadays society, on the other hand we verify that grotesque and comic are dominating the world. In the past, comicality wasn?t exactly free, it was sacred and had rituals. It was less intellectualized, definitely a laugh of ?low belly?, but it was sacred. Nowadays, everything is unsacred, including humor. The Dionysian rituals, the ?saturas?, ?nave des fous?? have gone forever and now we watch to the triumph of stand up comedy. This light kind of social exercise, of living and explaining life is established on the power chairs and politicians became funnier than comedians. It is also established on the communication chairs, manipulating news in a politically correct way. And it is trying to establish itself in cartoon turning it into graphic illustration.
Nowadays, fear is being imposed as a governing weapon, as a living terrorism.
This year is my 25th anniversary as producer of humoristic drawings events (more than 400 events), of cartoon books publications and of graphic humour investigation in Portugal. I wrote some less inspired texts, and also read genial works (I know now that I don?t know so much than when I started). For us, investigators it is easy to stroll among words, concepts, thinking about other?s work, but in face what do the artists say about their work? I like to listen to them; I like to be an active link between what they think and what the readers say.
In the presence of the ?Cartoons War? controversy, of the fundamentalists reactions, of politicians who take advantage of violent minorities movements to shut up inconvenient voices; of some cartoonists who chose to accommodate themselves instead of fighting? I began to question about the role of the cartoon in this troubled society, and obviously about its future. Is it still the bastion of the western culture democratization? Is there yet any freedom of speech allowing the survival of the political satire?
Is this an existential doubt caused by the turn of the century? Andrey Feldshteyn mentions in his letter, to be found in ?History of Cartoon from the ancient time till our days? (published in St. Petersburg in 1903) the exactly same doubt: ?Will the cartoon survive with all this modern politeness and courtesy in the relationship between individuals and even countries??
With internet help I searched for live testimonials of artists from the five continents, atheists, Christians, Muslims, Orthodoxes, Protestants, Taoists, Buddhists? ironists, satirists and comedians. I contacted around 400 artists and 20 associations. My questionnaire was integrated in several forum sites like ?cartoonblues? (Rússia) and FECO (Federation of Cartoonist?s Organizations). It was also published in sites as cartoonworld, cartoonistconspiracy, chavedoburaco.blogspot.com, portalhumor... and of course in mine: humorgrafe.blogspot.com
I had some problems communication with those who do not speak English, French, Spanish or Portuguese. At the end, 50 artists participated (with words or drawings). Obviously I?m not looking for consensus or any indestructible truth. Since I do not have much room in my book, I will only publish the most valuable pieces. After meditating, these were the questions that came up to my mind:

INTRODU??O

No passado, a comicidade n?o vivia selvaticamente livre, estava sacralizada, ritualizado.
Andrey Feldshteyn refere na sua carta, ter encontrado no livro "History of Cartoon from the ancient time till our days" (editado em Saint Petersburg in 1903) a mesma dúvida: "Will the cartoon survive with all this modern politeness and courtesy in the relationship between individuals and even countries?"
